Many in Panama may not be familiar with the jerkin’ dance movement and that is ok, because it only started early 2008 and started getting traction on 2009. The jerkin’ dance has a basic move which consists in moving the legs in and out to the rhythm. There are a few variations called the reject, the dip and the pindrop among others. The dancers often wear skinny jeans, in order to distance themselves from the hip hop style who favors baggy pants. Wearing skinny jeans while dancing the jerk also emphasizes the leg movement.

The jerkin’ dance is gaining popularity in Panama as it’s often mixed with passa passa and break dancing. In Panama, like in other parts of the world it’s still not widespread, but if you’d like a sample, simply attend discos where dance hall and passa passa music is played, you are bound to see a few dancers swinging their legs or jerkin’. Even popular dance crews in Panama have already started adding jerkin’ moves into their choreographies. The movement also has a few dedicated artists; one example is the duo “New Boyz” who with their hit “You are a Jerk” has boosted the popularity of the movement. Such is the buzz about this brand new type of dance that major recording labels like Arista have signed various groups and are looking seriously at many other jerk groups.

Panama has a wealth of music influences on its dances. Its traditional or folkloric dances are very popular among Panamanians and tourists alike. And has gained acceptance as one of the most beautiful dances in the world. Folkloric dances in Panama are staged choreographies that depict a wide range of emotions, activities and feelings. One example among the abundant traditional folkloric dances is called “El Punto” (literally: the point).

Named that way because of the accentuation on the beat. It represents how a man woos a woman until he wins her affection and finally seals their love with a kiss. When executed by dancers that have chemistry with each other, it’s almost a play on its own.

Another folkloric dance in Panama doesn’t require you learning a choreography. The popular “pindin” is what most people refer to as “tipico”. It comes from the Colombian cumbia, played with somewhat similar instruments but with different rhythm and melody.

In Panama, there are places called “toldos” where people gather specifically to move the rhythm of the accordion the whole night. Toldos are usually packed, so people have a chance to romantically fuse each other with the sweet melody. For the tourist visiting Panama who wants to appreciate the beauty of the folkloric dances, places like Restaurante Las Tinajas and Mi Pueblito have shows all year and have accessible prices. If you want to learn how to dance pindin, go to any disco or toldo and pick up a local girl. They’ll show you the simple steps, and then just let the music drive you.

Descendant from Cuban music, salsa encompasses many different rhythms, like mambo, chachachá, son and even rumba. Being a tropical rhythm, Panama has engraved its name in the history of Salsa music and it’s one of most mentioned venues after Cuba and Puerto Rico. Famous singer Ruben Blades and composer Omar Alfanno are Panamanians.

Many songs internationally acclaimed also mention this country, as homage. Salsa dancing is practically requirement for club goers, most clubs will play a long Salsa mix for couples to dance. The change of rhythm and style is an aid for meeting partners, because it’s danced in close proximity. This is a perfect chance to be a little intimate and overcome the touch barrier. For the skilled tourist, there are plenty of places where to show off their best moves. For the novice or those interested in learning, there are many dancing schools in Panama with affordable prices and flexible schedules.

There are many reasons why you should join a Panama dancing academy. You’ll need the training for when you meet a guy/girl from Panama. Take this example for instance: You are in a dance club in Panama, and you see someone of the opposite sex that interests you. But the problem is that there is a language barrier. You speak English and he/she doesn’t. So, how are you supposed to communicate? Well, one of the most expressive ways of communication is through song and dance! When you are strutting your stuff on the dance floor, you don’t have to talk, so that automatically solves the language problem!

Learning how to Latin dance from a dancing academy allows you to get to know your partner while having fun. I say this because a lot of tourists that arrive in Panama don’t speak Spanish. So when they meet a person from Panama, it is difficult to find out what that person likes to do for fun. Well, one thing you must know about Panamanians is that they love to dance. So taking that someone from Panama to a night club is a good idea! But if you don’t know which dancing academy to go to learn to Latin dance, then don’t worry! There are many schools that you can go to in Panama that can help you with that problem like: Alina’s Dance Academy, Panama Hot Salsa dancing academy, Academia Artiste and many more. These dance schools from Panama will teach you how to move your body like a pro! Learn to dance Salsa, merengue, bachata, rumba, chachachá, tango, típico (tradicional dance from Panama), and many others at a dancing academy!

So if you are new to Panama and you want to make some new friends, then I suggest you start learning the Latin dance moves that bring many people from different countries together at a dancing academy! And once you got your Latin rhythm, you can hit the clubs in Panama!

The flamenco has at least three different backgrounds: Arabic, Hebrew, and gypsy. Flamenco movements are very emotional and they are expressed through the arms, body and the rhythmic steps of the feet. It is also very characteristic of flamenco the use of castanets and fans.

During the last century, flamenco took a turn to a more choreographic style called Ballet Flamenco. It gave pass to the rise of great stars like Israel Galván, Rafael Amargo, Sara Baras, Joaquin Cortez y Eva Yerbabuena.

Here in Panama City, Panama, we have excellent flamenco academies. Academia Jaleo stands out of the others under the instruction of flamenco teacher Stephanie Colatruglio. It is located at Costa del Este. Also, you can take private flamenco lessons at Akila Yoga y Danza, Punta Pacifica. At El Dorado Mall there is Pro Stars & Dance, in Paitilla Academy K-Dance, and in San Francisco academy Espazio Flamenco.

With flamenco classes you can have fun breaking a sweat while looking sexy!

He went to the bookstore trying to find something to read. And there was a childhood book that caught his attention, Old Possum’s Book by T. S. Eliot. During the flight, Webber came up with the idea that he could create a musical based in the children’s book. And CATS the musical was born!

CATS is one of the longest running musical shows in the world with almost 9000 times played in London. In 1983 it won seven Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured actress for Betty Buckley, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Direction.

The original CATS costumes were designed by John Napier and they had evolved into today’s complex designs. The actors wear special cat-like furry costumes with long tails and wings. And the makeup completes the actors’ feline appearances.

Here in Panama, the original Broadway version of CATS will be play under the direction of Trevor Nunn and the original choreography by Gillian Lynne.

CATS will run in Panama from December 16-20 at Teatro Anayansi, Atlapa. Prices range from $25 to $100.
